Interactive session startup — worker evidence

Task: 5d6735bd-5fd4-495e-b6f9-e2049743e859, frozen version 9. Execution: 2682602f-4a31-4232-9127-31055cc23dc0. Repository: h8v6/heyaira; branch: heyaira/5d6735bd. Source and starting base: 57dd982ee650035d9f4d0c7023561fe0555b9430. The commit containing this evidence is the local result; its SHA and post-commit checks are recorded in the RESULT receipt. There was no carried candidate. No subagents were used.

Cause and implementation

The base has no session_start tool. Interactive clients previously needed client-specific local resume and handoff commands. The new read-only tool uses the same account document reader and layer manifest function as catalog workflow assembly. It returns five document entries in four ordered layers (the two skills each have layer procedures), resolves a shared tracking head once per invocation, reports missing configuration, limits total UTF-8 content to 60 KiB, refuses execution credentials and unsupported roles, and returns only active calling-project instruction references without content.

The two tool-neutral skills preserve handoff/takeover semantics and put optional client session management in separate paragraphs. Startup instructions, the reference table, served tool list and exported MCP contract include the tool. The source copies are removed and the former handoff document links to the skills. Core and mode instruction contents, migrations, Bridge and dispatch contracts are unchanged. The shared reader extraction preserves workflow behavior, covered by the account-source suite.

Commands and actual results

All commands ran in /Users/jablonskib/HeyAira-agents/.heyaira-worktrees/heyaira/5d6735bd-worker. Python is the prepared Python 3.12 environment; dependencies were not installed. Database fixtures used the provided test PostgreSQL configuration, created isolated disposable databases and applied the existing migrations. Git and authentication in the fixtures are synthetic; PostgreSQL and MCP handlers are real. No listening server or production database was used.

Regression before implementation

Command: PYTHONPATH=src python -m pytest tests/test_session_start.py -q

Exit: 1. Actual summary: 9 failed in 87.72s (0:01:27). The new tests failed at the MCP call, including:

result = await f.server.call_tool('session_start', args)
E mcp.server.mcpserver.exceptions.ToolError: Unknown tool: session_start

Targeted PostgreSQL suites after implementation

Command: PYTHONPATH=src TMPDIR="$PWD/.heyaira/task-tmp" python -m pytest tests/test_session_start.py tests/test_account_instruction_sources.py -q

Exit: 0. Actual summary of the first combined run: 56 passed in 196.35s (0:03:16). No skipped tests.

After adding the exact byte-boundary regression, command: PYTHONPATH=src TMPDIR="$PWD/.heyaira/task-tmp" python -m pytest tests/test_session_start.py -q

Exit: 0. Actual summary: 10 passed in 30.33s. No skipped tests. The exact 60 KiB Unicode payload passes, while adding bytes fails with session_start_too_large; hashes use UTF-8 and counts/tokens use characters.

Final combined rerun of the same targeted command, including the expanded onboarding suite: exit 0, 57 passed in 177.91s (0:02:57). No skipped tests.

Existing MCP and documentation contract tests

Command: PYTHONPATH=src TMPDIR="$PWD/.heyaira/task-tmp" python -m pytest tests/test_mcp_runtime_contract.py tests/test_docs_contract.py -q

Exit: 0. Actual summary: 26 passed in 22.25s. No skipped tests.

Command: python scripts/export_mcp_contract.py

Exit: 0. Output: wrote contracts/mcp-tools.json.

Command: python scripts/check_docs_contract.py

Exit: 0. Output: documentation contract passed: 47 MCP tools covered.

Command: python scripts/export_mcp_contract.py --check

Exit: 0. Output: MCP contract is up to date.

Skill inspection and format verification

Read both new skills, README, the handoff link document, startup and operations documents and MCP instructions. The skills are client-neutral; optional session API steps appear in separate paragraphs. There was no existing skill-format test in tests/ or scripts/ (searched for frontmatter, skill index/source paths and format checks).

Command: python -c '<format assertions below>' (exit 0):

from pathlib import Path
import yaml
root = Path('docs/agents/skills')
for name in ('take-over-session', 'write-session-handoff'):
    text = (root / name / 'SKILL.md').read_text()
    header = yaml.safe_load(text.split('---', 2)[1])
    assert set(header) == {'name', 'description', 'trigger', 'output', 'owner', 'scope', 'status'}
    assert header['name'] == name and header['status'] == 'active'
    assert len(header['description']) <= 200
    assert name + '/SKILL.md' in (root / 'README.md').read_text()
    assert 'If the client has session-management tools (for example Claude Desktop)' in text
    print(name + ': valid frontmatter, listed in README, optional client paragraph')
assert not (root / '_sources').exists()
server = Path('src/heyaira/server.py').read_text()
assert 'call server_identity, then session_start, then continuity_context' in server
print('_sources absent; MCP startup order verified')

Actual output:

take-over-session: valid frontmatter, listed in README, optional client paragraph
write-session-handoff: valid frontmatter, listed in README, optional client paragraph
_sources absent; MCP startup order verified

Git and execution limitations

The supplied prepared Git executable is /Users/jablonskib/Library/Application Support/HeyAira Bridge/task-bin/git. Initial Git reads returned:

git status --short: empty (clean)
git remote get-url origin: [email protected]:h8v6/heyaira.git
git branch --show-current: heyaira/5d6735bd
git rev-parse HEAD: 57dd982ee650035d9f4d0c7023561fe0555b9430
git log -1 --format='%H %P':

The default /usr/bin/git launcher reported a sandbox cache-write denial in the system temporary directory; the prepared executable completed the required reads. A shell here-document also failed to create a system temporary file; the same workspace-only edit succeeded with python -c. The optional ps diagnostic was denied. These were environment limitations, not test failures. Git's unreadable global ignore file produced warnings but did not prevent checks. Task tests used temporary files inside the worktree. No sandbox exception, installation, push, pull request, merge or deployment was performed.

git diff --check completed with exit 0 and no output. Full-suite CI and independent verification were not run by this worker and remain Bridge stages.

Command: git diff --cached --name-only 57dd982ee650035d9f4d0c7023561fe0555b9430 (using the prepared Git executable). Exit: 0. Actual output:

All 15 paths are allowed. The final git diff --name-only 57dd982ee650035d9f4d0c7023561fe0555b9430..HEAD is run after the local commit; its actual result belongs in RESULT, avoiding a self-referential result SHA.
